When you encounter a stopped emergency vehicle on the road, the proper response is to pull over to the right and come to a stop. This action protects both the emergency responders and yourself, as stopping allows the emergency personnel to safely complete their work without the risk of being struck by passing vehicles.

In many jurisdictions, there are laws that require drivers to yield the right of way to emergency vehicles, which includes moving over or slowing down for them. Pulling over not only shows respect for the emergency personnel but also contributes to overall road safety.

Maintaining a safe distance from the emergency vehicle is crucial, as they may have personnel or equipment outside the vehicle that could be a hazard if drivers do not give them adequate space. This practice ensures a safer environment for everyone involved, especially in potentially dangerous or high-stress situations where emergency services are required.
